CRIME ALERT – VEHICLE THEFT |

|
Evans Way, Chipping Norton Date: Tuesday 3 November 2026 Chipping Norton Neighbourhood Policing Team is appealing for information following the theft of an electric vehicle from Evans Way, Chipping Norton. The vehicle was stolen in less than 30 seconds. This incident highlights how quickly modern vehicles can be stolen using sophisticated electronic equipment, often without the offender needing access to the vehicle’s physical key.
HOW DOES KEYLESS VEHICLE THEFT WORK? Some modern electric and keyless-entry vehicles are vulnerable to high-tech digital theft. Criminals can use specialised electronic devices to exploit weaknesses in a vehicle’s security system. Depending on the make and model, these devices may relay, mimic or manipulate electronic signals, allowing offenders to unlock and start a vehicle without possessing the genuine key fob. In some cases, thieves can communicate directly with the vehicle’s electronic systems, including those associated with the door handle. The entire theft can take just seconds, often without causing any visible damage.
OLD-FASHIONED SECURITY CAN BEAT MODERN TECHNOLOGY! Although vehicle technology continues to advance, traditional physical security measures remain an effective way of deterring thieves. We strongly encourage vehicle owners to consider the following precautions: STEERING WHEEL LOCKS A brightly coloured, heavy-duty steering wheel lock provides an immediate visual deterrent. Even if criminals manage to bypass the vehicle’s electronic security, they still face a physical barrier. WHEEL CLAMPS A robust wheel clamp can prevent a vehicle from being driven away. These are particularly useful for vehicles parked overnight or for extended periods. DRIVEWAY SECURITY POSTS Consider installing a lockable, retractable security bollard on your driveway. This creates a substantial physical obstacle, preventing a vehicle from being driven away without first removing the barrier. PARKING POSITION Where possible, park your vehicle in a locked garage or behind secure gates. If you have more than one vehicle, consider parking in a way that makes the more valuable vehicle difficult to remove. MOTION-ACTIVATED LIGHTING AND CCTV Well-positioned CCTV cameras, video doorbells and motion-activated security lighting can discourage offenders and provide valuable evidence should a crime occur. ADDITIONAL IMMOBILISERS Consider having an independent, professionally installed immobiliser fitted. These can provide an additional layer of protection if the manufacturer’s electronic security is compromised. MAKE YOUR VEHICLE A DIFFICULT TARGET Criminals often look for opportunities to steal vehicles quickly and with minimal resistance. A visible steering wheel lock, wheel clamp or driveway bollard may be enough to persuade an offender to move on. No security measure is completely theft-proof, but combining traditional physical security with modern technology can significantly increase the difficulty of stealing your vehicle. Remember: Modern thieves may use sophisticated technology, but sometimes the simplest security measures provide the strongest visible deterrent. Chipping Norton Neighbourhood Policing Team | ||
