Keep your home safe during the darker nights

With the darker evenings now upon us, we would like to share some simple steps you can take to help protect your home and property.

If you're popping out

Even if you're only leaving the house for a short time:

Close and lock all doors and windows.

Double-lock external doors where possible.

Keep valuables out of sight, including any packaging from expensive purchases.

Keep handbags, keys, car keys and other valuables away from letterboxes and cat flaps.

Avoid leaving car documents or identification in obvious places such as kitchens or hallways.

Close curtains and leave a light on during the evening.

If you're out for longer periods, consider using timer switches for lights and a radio.

Set your burglar alarm before leaving.

Ensure side gates are locked.

Secure sheds and garages.

If you're going away

Before leaving for a holiday or extended period:

Avoid sharing travel plans publicly on social media.

Use timer switches for lights and a radio to make your home appear occupied.

Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property.

Consider asking a neighbour to close curtains after dark.

If your driveway will be empty, ask a neighbour if they can occasionally park there.

Cancel or redirect deliveries such as newspapers or milk to prevent them accumulating outside your home.
