Don't Make It Easy for Opportunist Thieves |

We are reminding residents to take a few simple steps to help keep their vehicles safe and reduce the chances of becoming a victim of crime. Whilst we are not currently seeing large numbers of vehicles being forcibly broken into, we have received reports of individuals walking around residential streets and car parks trying vehicle door handles to see if vehicles have been left unlocked. These offenders are often looking for an easy opportunity and will move on quickly if they find a vehicle secure. An unlocked vehicle can provide quick access to valuable items such as mobile phones, wallets, handbags, tools, work equipment, bank cards, and house keys. In some cases, stolen documents or keys can lead to further offences, including burglary or vehicle theft. To help protect your vehicle: ✅ Always lock your vehicle, even if it is parked outside your home or only being left for a short time. ✅ Check that all windows, doors and sunroofs are fully closed and secure. ✅ Remove valuables from sight. If possible, take them with you rather than leaving them in the vehicle. ✅ Do not leave bags, coats, charging cables or loose change on display, as these can attract unwanted attention. ✅ Never leave spare keys or keyless entry fobs inside your vehicle. ✅ If your vehicle has keyless entry, store keys away from doors and windows and consider using a signal-blocking pouch. ✅ Park in well-lit areas where possible and make use of CCTV-covered locations. ✅ Ensure tools and work equipment are removed overnight or secured within a locked storage box. Criminals often target vehicles during the evening and early morning hours when streets are quieter and there are fewer people around. Something as simple as checking your vehicle is locked before heading inside can make all the difference.
