Bonfire Night approaching, West Midlands Police is encouraging residents across Halesowen to enjoy the celebrations safely, responsibly and considerately.
Whether you are heading out attending a fireworks display, or celebrating with family and friends, a few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe and prevent accidents, injuries and anti-social behaviour.
Bonfire Night: Enjoy the Event, Respect the Risks
Bonfires and fireworks are a long-standing tradition, but they can cause serious injuries, fires and damage when used irresponsibly.
Attending an organised display is the safest way to enjoy Bonfire Night. Professional events are planned, supervised and managed with public safety in mind. West Midlands Police and fire services strongly encourage residents to choose organised displays whenever possible.
If you are planning a private celebration:
Keep spectators at a safe distance.
Have water, sand or a fire extinguisher readily available.
Never use petrol, paraffin or other accelerants to start a bonfire.
Position bonfires well away from buildings, fences, sheds, trees and overhead cables.
Check bonfire piles carefully for wildlife before lighting them.
Keep children and pets away from fires and fireworks.
Never throw items onto an active bonfire.
Dispose of used fireworks safely once they have fully cooled.
Understanding Firework Categories
Fireworks sold in the UK are classified according to their intended use and level of hazard.
Category F1
These are low-hazard fireworks intended for use in confined spaces and, in some cases, indoors. Examples include party poppers, Christmas crackers and certain novelty fireworks. Individuals aged 16 and over can purchase and use Category F1 fireworks.
Category F2
These are low-hazard outdoor fireworks suitable for smaller spaces such as gardens. They are commonly available from retailers and can only be purchased and used by adults aged 18 and over.
Category F3
These fireworks are designed for larger open outdoor areas and require greater safety distances. They are also classed as adult fireworks and may only be purchased and used by people aged 18 and over.
Category F4
These are professional display fireworks intended for use by trained and licensed operators only. They are not available for public purchase or use.
Fireworks and the Law
Fireworks must be used responsibly and within the law.
Key legal requirements include:
Adult fireworks (Categories F2 and F3) can only be purchased by those aged 18 and over.
Category F4 fireworks are restricted to licensed professionals.
It is illegal to set off or throw fireworks in streets, parks or other public places.
Fireworks may generally be used between 7am and 11pm.
On Bonfire Night the cut-off time is extended to midnight.
On New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, fireworks may be used until 1am.
Those who use fireworks irresponsibly risk enforcement action and could face fines or prosecution.
Looking Out for Others
While many people enjoy fireworks, they can be distressing for vulnerable residents, pets, livestock and wildlife. Consider informing neighbours if you are planning a display and avoid setting fireworks off late at night whenever possible. Responsible celebrations help ensure everyone can enjoy the season safely.

Halloween and Bonfire Night should be memorable for the right reasons. By planning ahead, respecting others and following safety guidance, residents can help make Halesowen a safer place for everyone.
