BURGLARY ADVICE |
||
Good Evening Residents,
Burglars are on the look out - lock up this Halloween
The darker nights provide the perfect cover for burglars to operate. We are asking people across the West Midlands to layer up your home and vehicle security before it's too late.
While our latest crime data reveals that, in the West Midlands, home burglaries are down nearly 8% (to 8,672 offences) and vehicle crime down 0.5% (23,750 offences), we know there is still more to do. Burglars can enter homes in different ways, through unlocked back doors, garages, and first-floor windows easily accessed by low garden fences or wheelie bins.
In the frosty mornings, we often get calls where opportunistic thieves have driven off with cars left to defrost alone and left running with the keys in the ignition. Protect your loved ones and your valuables with our simple security tips below.
Improve your home security by:
Using timer switches for lights: Set indoor lights on timers to make it look like someone is home, even if you’re out. Securing doors and windows: Double-check that all entry points, including porches and sheds, are securely locked - even when you're home. Activating house alarms: If you have an alarm system, ensure it's activated when you leave and use any zonal functions during the night. Using smart lighting: Motion-sensitive outdoor lights can help deter burglars by lighting up when someone approaches your property. Check your UPVC doors or Euro Cylinders: Make sure they meet the DHF TS007 3 Star or Sold Secure Diamond Standard Anti‑Bump level of protection. A Master Locksmiths Association accredited locksmith can advise if you’re unsure. Badly fitted cylinders can compromise security and can be easily snapped. Family gold, cash, and jewellery: Keep valuables in a fire-resistant safe hidden away in a safe location. Never store cash or high-value items in the bedroom, this is the first-place burglars will look.
Protect your ride - vehicle safety:
Keep keys away from windows and doors: It’s easy to leave your keys in the lock or by the front door in plain sight. It only takes seconds for a thief to take advantage of this opportunity. When leaving your vehicle at home, or out shopping, be sure to check your fob has done its job. Criminals can block the signals from your key fob to your vehicle so look out for other signs your vehicle is locked, such as folded in wing mirrors, flash of head lights, or the manufacturer app on your mobile. Steering wheel locks: Consider using physical deterrents such as steering locks for added protection. Never leave your car unattended with the engine running, even on your drive. Opportunist thieves can steal a defrosting vehicle in seconds. Talk to your vehicle manufacturer to see if there are any additional security updates or firmware that can be installed on your vehicle. If you vehicle asks you to update your software or firmware accept it and let it update.
Many thanks and Stay Safe.
