Crime Prevention Advice: Protect Your Vehicle Keys

Many burglars target homes specifically to obtain car keys. Taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk:

Keep vehicle keys out of sight and away from doors, windows, letterboxes and ground floor areas.

Consider storing keys in a signal-blocking (Faraday) pouch to prevent relay thefts involving keyless vehicles.

Ensure all doors and windows are locked, even when at home.

Install and use a house alarm where available.

Consider fitting motion-activated security lighting around vulnerable areas of your property.

Avoid leaving spare keys in obvious hiding places outside.

If possible, park vehicles in a locked garage.

Use additional vehicle security such as steering wheel locks, tracking devices or immobilisers.

Do not leave vehicle documentation or spare keys inside your vehicle.

If your vehicle has keyless entry, check with the manufacturer for available security updates and settings.
