🌙 Heading Home After Dark? Follow These Simple Safety Tips

Dear Resident

As the evenings become darker, many people find themselves travelling to and from work, education, social events, or other activities after sunset. While most journeys are completed safely, taking a few simple precautions can help you feel more confident and reduce your risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Top tips for staying safe during darker evenings:

💡 Plan your route in advance. Where possible, stick to well-lit, busy routes and avoid shortcuts through secluded areas.

📱 Keep your mobile phone charged and easily accessible. Consider carrying a portable charger if you'll be out for an extended period.

👀 Stay aware of your surroundings. Avoid distractions such as using your phone or wearing headphones at a volume that prevents you from hearing what's happening around you.

🚶 Walk confidently and purposefully. Being alert and aware can help you identify and avoid potential risks.

👥 Travel with others where possible. If you're meeting friends or heading home after an event, consider travelling together.

🚖 Use licensed transport services. If using a taxi or private hire vehicle, ensure it is properly licensed and pre-booked where possible.

🔦 Make yourself visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking, running, or cycling near roads.

📍 Let someone know your plans. Tell a trusted friend or family member where you're going and when you expect to arrive.

🎒 Keep valuables secure and out of sight. Avoid displaying expensive items such as phones, jewellery, or electronic devices unnecessarily.

🚨 Trust your instincts. If a situation or location feels unsafe, leave the area and seek help from a safe place nearby.

Remember:

Stay aware. Stay connected. Stay safe.

Most people enjoy their journeys without incident, but criminals often look for opportunities where individuals may be distracted or vulnerable. Taking a few simple precautions can help reduce risk and increase your confidence whilst out and about.
