🌙 Darker Evenings: Keep Your Home and Community Secure

As the evenings become darker, the Safer Neighbourhood team is reminding residents to take a few simple precautions to protect their homes, vehicles and belongings.

🏠 Home security

Lock doors and windows securely, even when you are at home.

Use timer switches or smart lighting when your property is unoccupied.

Keep keys, wallets, phones and other valuables away from doors and windows.

Never leave keys near letterboxes where they could be reached from outside.

Check that sheds, garages and outdoor storage areas are properly secured.

🏢 Communal security

Make sure communal entrance doors close and lock behind you.

Do not allow unknown individuals to follow you into the building.

Only admit visitors you recognise or are expecting.

Report faulty doors, locks, lighting or entry systems to your housing provider or building manager.

🚗 Vehicles and bicycles

Remove valuables and bags from view, even if they appear empty.

Check that your vehicle is locked before walking away.

Secure bicycles to a fixed object using a good-quality lock.

Record bicycle frame numbers and consider property marking and registration.

👀 Look out for your neighbours

If you notice suspicious behaviour, do not confront anyone. Record descriptions, locations, times, vehicle details and directions of travel only where it is safe to do so.

Call 999 if a crime is taking place, a suspect is still present or someone is in immediate danger. For non-emergency matters, report online or call 101.
