Dear Resident,
Cycle theft is still an issue across the force area, many of these thefts involved cycles that have either being left insecure or they have been secured using a low security lock that can easily be cut, so this message will look at what cycle lock options there are for people to buy.
Cycle usage is increasing with many people using them to get to work, or as one of their main modes of transport.
The average cost of a cycle is also going up, with a price tag of around £500 being suggested, and many cycles costing much more than that, when you take into consideration electric cycles or road racing/off road cycles.
I have attended many businesses as part of my role, and one thing we do look at is if there are suitable options for employees to secure their cycles if they ride them to work, and also is there advice near those areas to remind people that they should be locking their cycles.
Cycle locks as with other types of security do show that you most often get what you pay for. If you choose to buy a cycle lock for £5 and secure a cycle that costs over £500 with it, there is a very high chance that the cycle will not be there on your return.
We always recommend the use of Sold Secure rated cycle locks, these locks have been put through additional testing, which includes them being attacked by a variety of tools and cutting equipment, sometimes over prolonged periods. There are many videos on platforms such as you tube that will show the testing of such products.
The ratings go from Diamond to Bronze and also cover electric bike locks. I have added attachments to this message that show the different ratings and what they should be used for. If you are aware of someone who does use a cycle, please share this information with them.
We always recommend locking a cycle, even if it has only been left for very short period, and locking it up at home, using a suitable ground anchor.
More information about Sold Secure and the other products that they cover, can be found on their website.
I hope you find this information useful. If there are any recommendations for future crime prevention messages, please let me know.
Feel free to share this message or post on social media. Further crime prevention advice is available on the Secured by Design website, design guides and information leaflets are also available
Regards
Jamie
