Amber Weather Warning for Wind

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for wind, which runs through much of the weekend.

Key information

Warning area covers the whole of the Scottish Borders

Warning in place from 9pm on Saturday to 9pm on Sunday

Gusts of up to 70mph expected widely

Gusts of up to 80mph are possible in some exposed locations

There will also be periods of heavy rain

Some damage to buildings and trees likely, and resulting flying debris

Risk of power cuts and travel disruption

Be prepared for high winds

An underlying yellow weather warning for wind runs from 12noon on Saturday to 9pm on Sunday

Very strong westerly winds associated with Storm Boelo are expected with fairly widespread gusts of 60 to 70 mph and gusts to 80 mph in exposed coastal areas. The strongest winds will initially affect western Scotland and far north of Northern Ireland on Saturday evening and then spread eastwards overnight and through Sunday. High winds will be accompanied by periods of heavy rain and frequent showers. The winds will gradually ease from the west through Sunday.
