Thefts of mobility scooters

Thefts of mobility scooters

Dear Resident,

There has been a noticeable rise in thefts of mobility scooters across the area, and this message is to provide some hints and tips to reduce the risk of a mobility scooter being stolen.

I am aware that this will not affect everyone who receives this, but if you have friends, family, or neighbours who it may affect, please let them know.

I have sent messages out previously with the top 5 hints and tips and this message is no different.

Secure the scooter when it is unattended and remove the keys, even if only leaving it for a few minutes. We recommend using a sold secure gold standard or above security chain and gold standard padlock, also make sure it is locked to something that prevents the chain from being removed. You could also fit an alarm to your scooter that can be activated by a fob when you leave it.

Choose a safe place to park when out and about. Don't leave the scooter in isolated areas, where ever possible park in a well-lit area that is covered by CCTV (Remember to lock it as well)

Protect your scooter at home, if you can, park your scooter in a secure garage or a secure outbuilding. We recommend also fitting an alarm to the storage area so you will be alerted if someone enters. Make sure you still lock your scooter with a chain and padlock to a secure ground anchor, even if it inside a garage or outbuilding. If you are unable to store your scooter inside, cover it with a suitable cover so it isn't obvious what is it. (Remember to lock it with a chain under the cover). Also lock any gates with a padlock to prevent a scooter being easily removed from your property.

Consider motion activated CCTV that will alert you if anyone is moving around outside, also fit signage warning that CCTV is in operation or warning that an alarm is being used.

Always report any suspicious activity to the Police using the 101 system or the 999 system if there is a crime in progress.

Details and photos of your scooter can be recorded on immobilise.com, this requires the setting up of a free account and following that you can add various types of property from around your home, please visit the website for more information.

Feel free to share this message or post on social media. Further crime prevention advice is available on the Secured by Design website.
