Ward Sergeant's Update - Criminal Justice System |

|
Here’s what your Safer Neighbourhood Team has been up to this week
The judicial system…
Earlier this week the Commissioner for the Metropolitan Police said on BBC’s Radio 4’s programme - "In London we've got nearly 500 cases listed for trial in 2030.” He also stated that in 40 years of policing he had never seen so much strain on the criminal justice system.
The number of defendants charged by the Met has risen from about 4000 a month two years ago to 7500 a month, this is despite the decreasing size of the Metropolitan Police.
All of this, plus the early release scheme is creating additional pressures on policing.
So how does this all affect the community?
You may recall from a previous newsletter I wrote in August, that your Neighbourhood Policing Team arrested an individual on 17th August 2026 who was wanted in connection with six offences, including a £20,000 burglary, drug offences and theft offences. The individual was subsequently remanded to appear before the court, but at court he was granted bail pending a further hearing in September.
When the date of that hearing arrived, the individual failed to attend court as required, resulting in a warrant being issued for his arrest.
On 14th October 2026, your Neighbourhood Policing Team successfully located and arrested the individual for failing to appear at court in relation to the original offences. He was brought before the court on 15th October 2026 and has again been granted bail at court, with the case due to return to court in November.
Cases such as this highlight some of the challenges we face in keeping our neighbourhoods safe. We remain committed to identifying and arresting those suspected of committing offences, bringing offenders before the courts and doing everything within our powers to protect our communities. However, decisions regarding court bail and court proceedings are matters for the courts.
Please be assured that your local Neighbourhood Policing Team will continue to work tirelessly to prevent crime, protect victims and pursue those who seek to cause harm within our communities. Our commitment to keeping you, your property and your neighbourhood safe remains unchanged, we will continue to do all we can for you.
The team and I hope you have an amazing weekend
All the best
