Clare's Law: The Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme

I wanted to provide an update regarding violence against women and girls, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey.

Residents may be aware of Clare's Law, also known as the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS).

The scheme allows police to disclose information about a person's previous history of domestic abuse or violence where it is lawful, necessary and proportionate to do so, to help protect someone who may be at risk.

There are two ways information may be shared:
• Right to Ask - a member of the public can ask police to check whether a current or former partner has a history of abusive behaviour.
• Right to Know - police may proactively disclose information to someone if they believe that person may be at risk.

If you, or someone you know, may be at risk of domestic abuse, support and advice are available. In an emergency, always call 999.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers, and those seeking support in relation to protective injunctions may wish to contact the National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV) for advice and assistance.
