You raised shoplifting as a concern, so here’s a quick local update.

Two men have been charged and remanded to court following a significant retail crime incident at Waitrose, Finchley Road.

On 30 September 2026, store security staff observed two individuals selecting high-value bottles of alcohol, including champagne and cognac, before placing them into bags and attempting to leave the store without making payment.

The suspects were challenged and detained by the store's Mobile Intervention Team before they could leave the premises. During the detention of one of the suspects, a large number of bottles were knocked from a display, resulting in extensive damage to stock.

Officers attended promptly and worked closely with Waitrose staff to investigate the incident. CCTV footage, witness evidence, body-worn video and documentation detailing the losses were secured as part of the investigation.

The damage to stock was valued at approximately £3,200, in addition to the alcohol that was allegedly stolen.

As a result of the investigation, both suspects were charged with theft from shop, with one suspect facing an additional charge of criminal damage. Both were subsequently remanded into custody to appear before court.

This result demonstrates the effectiveness of the strong partnership between local businesses, store security teams and police in tackling retail crime, protecting staff and customers, and bringing offenders before the courts.

The Met is cracking down on street crime, like shoplifting, people doing drugs and phone-snatching.

We’ve put hundreds more officers on the frontlines of community crime-fighting teams, upping visible patrols in the right ‘hot spots’ so we can deter and catch criminals.

We’re now arresting more than 1,000 extra criminals every month and seeing ‘neighbourhood crime’ down 14%.

But we know there is more to do. That’s why we’re stepping up our use of technology, increasing our operations and working with retailers to make it less appealing for criminals to commit these crimes in the first place.

If you notice anything suspicious or witness anyone shoplifting, please report it as soon as possible. These reports are invaluable in letting us build a picture of when and where shop lifters operate, meaning we can be in the right place at the right time to arrest those responsible.
