Community Message - Illegal Use of Motorbikes and E-Bikes on Footpaths |
||
|
We have received a number of reports regarding motorbikes and electric bikes being ridden on footpaths, parks, open spaces and other areas where they are not permitted.
Riding motorbikes on footpaths is illegal and can pose a significant danger to pedestrians, children, cyclists and other path users. Many electric bikes are also being used unlawfully, particularly where they have been modified, are capable of travelling without pedalling, or exceed legal power and speed limits. In these cases, they may be classed as motor vehicles and must be insured, taxed and ridden in accordance with road traffic legislation.
One of the biggest challenges for police is identifying riders, as they often fail to stop and can quickly leave the area. Information from the public is therefore vital. If you know where these bikes are being stored, who is riding them, or the address they are regularly coming from, please report this information. Even seemingly minor details can help officers identify offenders, gather evidence and take positive action.
Reports can be made directly to the police, and information can also be provided anonymously through CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
By working together and continuing to report these incidents, we can help make our communities safer and reduce the antisocial and dangerous use of motorbikes and e-bikes in our neighbourhoods. If you see a bike being ridden illegally, please report the location, description of the rider, clothing worn, direction of travel, and any information about where the bike may be kept. Every piece of information could help identify those responsible.
