Crime Prevention Advice - Distraction Theft |

Good Morning Resident,
Distraction theft can happen quickly. Offenders may try to divert your attention while your belongings are taken, particularly in busy places such as cafΓ©s, restaurants, shops and public transport. Being aware of your surroundings and keeping valuables secure can help reduce the opportunity for theft.
π Be Aware of Distractions A distraction may appear completely innocent at first. Someone might: πΊοΈ Approach you with a question or ask for directions. π° Place an item, leaflet or other object over or near your belongings while speaking to you. π¬ Start an unexpected conversation designed to draw your attention away from your possessions. π₯ Work with another person, with one distracting you while another targets an unattended or poorly secured item. π₯ Create a commotion nearby that draws your attention elsewhere. Not every unexpected interaction is suspicious, but stay mindful of where your valuables are while engaging with someone you don't know.
π± Keep Valuables Secure Phones, wallets, purses and other small valuables can be easy to overlook when you're distracted. π Keep your belongings in sight. π Keep bags closed and close to you. π± Don't leave your phone or wallet unattended on a table. π» Take laptops and tablets with you if you leave your seat. β Take Extra Care When Sitting Down Relaxing in a cafΓ© or restaurant? Avoid leaving your bag somewhere you can't see it, such as behind your chair or underneath a table out of view. If someone approaches you unexpectedly, take a moment to make sure your belongings remain secure.
π₯ Look Out for Each Other If you're with friends, family or colleagues, help one another keep an eye on belongings. If you see someone behaving suspiciously, don't put yourself at risk by confronting them. Alert staff, security or police where appropriate.
π¨ If Something Is Stolen If you discover something has been taken, report the theft to police and inform staff at the location as soon as possible. If a crime is taking place right now and urgent police assistance is required, call 999.
A distraction may only last a few seconds. Keep your attention on your valuables and don't give an opportunistic thief an easy opportunity.
