Autumn/Winter Burglary Prevention Advice

Dear Residents

As the nights draw in and daylight hours become shorter, burglars can take advantage of properties that appear empty or insecure. A few simple steps can greatly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary.

🔒 Secure Your Home

Always lock doors and windows, even when you are at home.

Double lock UPVC doors and remove keys from locks.

Ensure side gates, sheds and garages are secured.

Consider fitting window and door alarms.

💡 Make Your Home Look Occupied

Use timer switches for lights when you are out.

Leave a radio or television on if away for short periods.

Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property when you are away.

Keep valuables, car keys, handbags and wallets out of sight.

Mark property with a forensic marking product or record serial numbers. (Smart Water)

Avoid displaying expensive items near windows.

🚗 Vehicle Security

Never leave keys near the front door or visible through windows.

Lock vehicles and remove valuables from sight.

Consider using a steering wheel lock for added security.

Activate alarms

Trim hedges and shrubs around doors and windows.

Ensure external lighting is working.

Consider motion-activated security lights and CCTV.

👀 Be Vigilant

Report any suspicious activity to police.

Look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours.

Join or support local neighbourhood watch initiatives.

Remember: Most burglars are opportunists. By making your home appear occupied, well-lit and secure, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim.
