Cycling Concerns on Gray’s Inn Road

Dear Residents,

The Safer Neighbourhood Team has recently received a number of reports regarding dangerous cycling behaviour at the junctions of Gray’s Inn Road with Clerkenwell Road and Gray’s Inn Road with High Holborn. Concerns raised include cyclists allegedly riding through red lights, crossing into moving traffic, and failing to give way to pedestrians using controlled crossings.

We understand why this is concerning. Reckless cycling can present a risk to pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users, and we appreciate residents taking the time to report these incidents to us.

In response to the reports received, we have ensured the information has been recorded and a report created. The concerns have also been disseminated to relevant policing teams so that the locations can be considered during patrols and operational activity where opportunities arise.

Whilst we recognise the concerns raised, it is important to note that the Safer Neighbourhood Team is not a dedicated roads policing unit and does not routinely deal with cycling or traffic-related enforcement. Responsibility for proactive enforcement of road traffic matters sits elsewhere within the Metropolitan Police, and as such our limited resources are primarily directed towards neighbourhood policing priorities, crime prevention, safeguarding, and addressing higher-harm offences affecting the ward. The concerns raised have nevertheless been recorded and shared with relevant teams for their awareness and consideration where operational opportunities arise.

Residents who continue to experience concerns may also wish to raise them with Camden Council, as they are often best placed to consider wider road safety measures, traffic management issues, and infrastructure improvements that may help address the problem in the longer term.
