Communal entrance doors are an important line of defence for flats and apartment buildings. Unfortunately, criminals can take advantage of insecure entrances to gain access to communal areas, bicycle stores, post rooms, and even residents' homes.
By working together, residents can help make their building a safer place to live.
🚪 Common Ways Criminals Gain Access 🚶 Tailgating Following a resident through a secure door without using a key, fob, or code. 📦 Posing as Delivery Drivers or Contractors Offenders may claim to be making a delivery or carrying out maintenance work. 🔓 Doors Left Open Communal doors that are propped open or fail to close properly provide easy access. 🔑 Shared Access Codes Entry codes shared too widely can quickly fall into the wrong hands.
✅ How Residents Can Help 🚪 Ensure entrance doors close securely behind you. 👀 Be aware of anyone attempting to enter behind you without using their own key, fob, or access code. ❓ Politely challenge unfamiliar people if it is safe to do so, or ask who they are visiting. 🔑 Keep access fobs, keys, and entry codes secure. 📱 Report lost or stolen fobs immediately so they can be deactivated. 🚫 Never prop open communal doors for convenience.
📦 Deliveries and Visitors 📞 Verify unexpected callers before allowing access. 📋 If someone claims to be a contractor, check whether works have been scheduled. 🚪 Avoid granting access to the entire building simply because someone says they are making a delivery.
🚨 Report Problems Promptly 🔧 Faulty locks, broken doors, damaged entry systems, or poor lighting should be reported to your housing provider, managing agent, or landlord as soon as possible. 📹 Report suspicious behaviour around communal entrances to police if appropriate.
