Towcester Knife Amnesty Bin

Good afternoon,

The newly installed knife amnesty bin within the town was emptied last weekend after its first 6 weeks and a whopping 105 knives had been safely disposed off. Amongst the knives disposed of were a machete and 2 large daggers. The bin is deliberately not covered by cctv and is for anyone to use to safely dispose of unwanted knives to keep them off the streets.

The benefits of the knife bin include:

Removing weapons from circulation: People can safely dispose of knives and other bladed items, reducing the number of weapons that could be used in crimes or carried unlawfully.

Improving community safety: Fewer knives in homes and on the streets can help reduce the risk of violence, accidental injuries, and theft of weapons.

Encouraging voluntary surrender: Amnesty bins provide a simple, anonymous way for individuals to hand in knives without fear of prosecution for possession during the amnesty period (subject to local scheme rules).

Raising public awareness: Knife amnesties often form part of wider campaigns that highlight the dangers and consequences of carrying knives.

Supporting crime reduction efforts: Removing weapons can contribute to broader strategies aimed at reducing knife crime and associated antisocial behaviour.

Providing a safe disposal method: Many people inherit, find, or no longer need knives and may not know how to dispose of them safely. Amnesty bins offer a secure solution.

It's situated on the side of the Sawpits building (the old library) on Richmond Road where it meets Meeting Lane in the centre of Towcester town.
