Otley – Tribute issued to man who died in collision

Police are naming a man who died in a road traffic collision in Otley last month, as his family pay tribute to him.

The collision occurred just before 4:30am on Friday 14 August on the B1079 Helmingham Road.

A red Volkswagen Polo was travelling away from Otley, while a white Ford Transit van was travelling towards Otley. The two vehicles collided and the driver of the VW Polo sadly died at the scene.

Subject to confirmation at formal inquest proceedings, the deceased has been identified as 47-year-old Desmond Mowles from Helmingham.

Desmond’s family have asked us to issue the following tribute on their behalf:

“Desmond, or Des as he liked to be known, was a much loved son, brother, dad, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend.

“He was one of a kind! He could make you laugh, drive you mad and somehow always be there when you needed him the most.

“He loved his music, his raves, dancing, his pit bikes but most of all his children and his family.

“As a family, we would like to pass on our heartfelt thanks to the medical professionals and first responders at the scene that morning who did everything they could to help him. We will always be grateful for the care, compassion and professionalism you showed during such an incredibly difficult time.

“His absence will leave a hole that can never be filled but the memories, the laughter, the music and the love he gave will stay with us forever.

“Fly high, keep dancing, play the music loud, ride the bike and get dirty. You will never be forgotten and you will always be loved.”

Officers are continuing to appeal for any potential witnesses and are asking any motorists driving in the area with a dashcam fitted in their vehicle, to review the footage for any material that may be of assistance.
