E-scooters and sur-rons - are you at risk?

Supported by PC Morris, PCSO Martin has held e-scooter and sur-ron awareness sessions over the past few months. At these sessions, people have told us that they did not know e-scooters and sur-rons were being used illegally.

PCSOs and police officers can seize an illegally driven e-scooter or sur-ron. We don’t want to be taking expensive items from users, and we suspect they don’t want these things seized either!

E-Scooter users:

E-scooters are viewed as motor vehicles and subject to insurance, MOT, etc. It is not possible to obtain insurance for a private e-scooter so any users are driving uninsured.

These cannot be used on a public road, cycle path or pavement.

E-scooters can be used on private land, with the landowner’s permission.

Sur-ron users:

Sur-rons are unregistered motor vehicles unless riding legally with a number plate and insurance.

The rest cannot be used on a public road, cycle path or pavement.

Sur-rons can be used at certain motocross tracks.

If we do seize an e-scooter or sur-ron, then the user will not be able to get it back.
