🔎 What is the Legal Tyre Tread Depth?

For cars, light vans and trailers, the legal minimum tyre tread depth in the UK is:

✅ 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre and around its entire circumference

Driving with tyres below the legal limit could result in:

⚠️ A fine of up to £2,500 per tyre
⚠️ Three penalty points per tyre
⚠️ Potential prosecution if the vehicle is found to be in a dangerous condition

🛑 Don't Wait Until the Legal Limit

Although 1.6mm is the legal minimum, many road safety organisations and tyre experts recommend replacing tyres when tread depth reaches around 3mm, particularly before winter.

This is because braking performance and grip in wet conditions can reduce significantly as tyre tread wears down.

Before winter arrives, take a few minutes to check:

✅ Tyre pressures are set correctly
✅ Tyres are free from cuts, cracks, bulges or other damage

A quick and easy way to check your tyres:

🪙 Insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves.

If you can see the outer rim of the coin, your tyre may be approaching an unsafe level of wear and should be inspected more closely.
