Marmoset surrendered following multi-agency animal welfare operation in Greenwich

A marmoset has been surrendered following a multi-agency animal welfare operation at a residential property in Greenwich. Officers from the Mottingham, Coldharour & New Eltham Safer Neighbourhood Team, working alongside the Greenwich Safer Neighbourhood Team, the Royal Borough of Greenwich Licensing Team, City of London officers and the RSPCA, attended following concerns that a primate was being kept at the property without the required licence and in unsuitable conditions.

The marmoset was found in an enclosure that was too small, without appropriate companionship and being fed an unsuitable diet.

Following engagement with the occupier of the property, the marmoset was voluntarily surrendered. It is due to be transferred to a wildlife park, where it will be housed with other marmosets and have access to an environment better suited to its natural welfare and social needs.

Primates have complex welfare needs and require specialist accommodation, appropriate nutrition, enrichment and opportunities to socialise with others of their own species. This operation highlights the importance of complying with the Animal Welfare (Primate Licences) (England) Regulations 2024 and the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

The successful outcome demonstrates the value of partnership working between local policing teams, the council and animal welfare organisations in safeguarding animal welfare and ensuring legal compliance.
