A number of e-scooters have been seized in the Newcastle Borough by officers over the weekend under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002, as amended by Section 8 of the Crime and Policing Act 2026. These amendments, which came into force on 29 June 2026, removed the requirement for police to issue a prior warning before seizing a vehicle being used in an anti-social manner causing alarm, distress or annoyance. This means officers can take immediate action where the legal criteria are met. Examples of this include, but are not exclusive to, riding on pavements, driving dangerously through traffic, or causing general anti-social effects to members of public. Members of the public are reminded that privately owned e-scooters cannot generally be used on public roads, pavements or other public places in the same way as a road-legal vehicle, and their use may result in enforcement action. We will not tolerate the illegal or antisocial use of e-scooters in our communities, nor will we tolerate abuse, threats or intimidation directed towards officers carrying out their duties. Please act responsibly, respect the law and respect those working to keep our communities safe. Parents, please if you have children who have e-scooters and e-bikes do not allow them to ride in public, also this includes adults who have them. We want to make our community a safe place. |
