Fly Tipping

Good Evening,

Due to a recent spate of Fly Tippings in the area, we wanted to give some advice regarding how to properly dispose of household waste.

There are multiple ways that you can do this.

The first way is taking the rubbish to a Waste Management centre yourself. These are designated facilities where municipal or commercial waste, recyclables, and other materials are received, sorted, treated, and consolidated for safe disposal or recovery.

The second way is to hire someone to dispose of the waste. If you do prefer this option, then you need to be making sure that they hold a valid Waste Operators License. Failure to do this can result in you being prosecuted for breaching your legal household duty of care, under Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, if you fail to take reasonable measures to check that the person or business to whom you are handing over your waste is registered as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency, you may be held responsible if the waste is subsequently disposed of illegally.

To check whether a business/individual is legitimate, ask to see their Waste Carrier's Licence, which will display a registration number. You can then visit the Environment Agency website and access the Public Register of Waste Carriers, Brokers, and Dealers. The register allows you to search using the business name, registration number, address, or postcode to confirm that the business is properly registered.

If you need any waste moving by anyone that isn't yourself, make sure that you take the relevant action to ensure to ensure that you avoid prosecution.
