Crime Alert - Scam or Fraud

Humberside Police have been contacted by residents locally who have been targeted by criminals purporting to be officers from both Kent Police and The Met.

Please be aware of this scam and the following information released by Kent Police this morning:

'Residents are reminded to be vigilant following multiple attempts to obtain personal information by criminals posing as officers on the phone. On Wednesday 16 September 2026, several members of the public reported receiving phone calls from people claiming to be from the police.

Victims were asked for information from what falsely appeared to be one of our phone numbers, that in the wrong hands could be used in an attempt to commit financial fraud. Investigations are underway into the incidents, with our officers working to identify those responsible whilst offering support to those affected.

Crime Prevention Advice: Never give personal information in response to an incoming call, particularly if the caller is asking you to do something that will affect you financially, including any personal bank information. If you receive such a call end it immediately. Wait five minutes for the phone line to clear, or call from a different number, and contact the police by dialing 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Remember the ABC rule to help protect yourself and others against fraud – never Assume someone is telling the truth, never Believe what they say unless you are confident that they are who they say they are, and always Confirm the details they have provided.

Anyone with information that may assist in identifying those responsible should call Kent Police on 01622 604100, quoting reference 16-1694.

Be suspicious of all ‘too good to be true’ offers and deals.

Don't hand over money or sign anything before getting appropriate advice.

Be very weary of ‘cold callers’ either on the phone, or in person.

Never give out you bank details or PIN to anyone. Your bank and the Police WILL NOT ask for this.

Don't withdraw money if asked to do so by anyone, again, your bank and the Police WILL NOT ask you to do this.

Don't be embarrassed to report a fraud/scam, by reporting what has happened, you make it more difficult for a fraudster to deceive someone else. You can report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online at Action Fraud

STOP - Take a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information. It could keep you safe

CHALLENGE - Ask yourself, could it be fake? It’s ok to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.

PROTECT - Contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve been scammed and report it to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk or on 0330 123 2040.
