Following complaints re 'Pedlars' in Bakewell, we would like to clarify exactly what a Pedlar is and what they are allowed to do when they have obtained a Pedlars certificate.

So what exactly is a Pedlar?
In the UK, a pedlar is someone who travels on foot and sells goods or services by going from place to place, such as door-to-door or from street to street, rather than trading from a fixed pitch or stall.

What is a Pedlar allowed to do?

Sell goods door-to-door anywhere in the UK.

Travel on foot carrying goods and offer them for sale. A small trolley may be used to carry stock.

Move from place to place while trading, rather than remaining at a fixed location.

Sell throughout the UK using a valid pedlar's certificate.

A pedlar is NOT allowed to;

Trade from a permanent or stationary stall, table, gazebo, or fixed pitch without the appropriate street trading consent or licence.

Trade as a pedlar without holding and producing a valid certificate when required.

The Community Safety Partnership at Derbyshire Dales District Council have recently issued a Community Protection Notice Warning to a Pedlar in the Bakewell area who has breached these conditions.

If you need to report issues in relation to Pedlars who are working outside their allowed conditions, you can do so through the Community Safety Partnership for a multi-agency response;
