We wanted to share a quick update about dangerous driving in your area. Please be assured we’re working to keep everyone safe. Operation to Tackle Illegal E-Bikes and Surron's in Chessington,
Following numerous reports and concerns raised by Chessington residents regarding anti-social behaviour involving illegal e-bikes and Surron motorcycles, the Chessington Safer Neighbourhood Team has successfully secured additional support from specialist MO8 Roads and Transport Policing Command officers.
This enhanced policing operation has been introduced directly in response to community feedback and reports linking the misuse of e-bikes and Surron's to anti-social behaviour, dangerous riding, and other criminality across the area.
For the next month, highly trained MO8 traffic officers will be deployed throughout Chessington alongside local neighbourhood officers. These specialist officers have the skills, equipment, and tactical options necessary to safely deal with offenders who refuse to stop for police, including those using illegal e-bikes and Surron motorcycles.
The aim of this operation is to identify and apprehend offenders, disrupt criminality, deter anti-social behaviour, and make Chessington's streets safer for residents.
We hope this increased enforcement activity will help reduce incidents and bring those responsible before the courts.
We would also like to take this opportunity to speak directly to parents and guardians. While some may view Surron's and modified e-bikes as harmless recreational vehicles, many are being ridden illegally on roads, pavements and public spaces. Riders can find themselves committing serious offences, including driving without insurance, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving.
Young people caught committing these offences may face significant consequences that could impact their future. Penalty points can be issued for offences committed before a person obtains a full driving licence, and these points can remain on record when they become eligible to drive. This could lead to licence suspension, higher insurance costs, difficulties obtaining insurance, or restrictions on their ability to drive in the future.
Illegal Surrons, modified e-bikes and similar vehicles are not toys. Many of these machines are capable of speeds exceeding 40mph and, when used illegally on roads, pavements and public spaces, pose a significant risk to both the rider and members of the public.
The message is simple: if your child is riding a Surron or modified e-bike illegally, there is a very real risk that they will be stopped, identified and dealt with by police. We ask parents to discuss these risks with their children and help us prevent further anti-social behaviour and criminality in our community.
We would like to thank residents who have taken the time to report incidents to us. Community intelligence and reporting have played a key role in securing these additional resources. We continue to encourage anyone witnessing anti-social behaviour, dangerous riding, or criminal activity involving e-bikes or Surron's to report it to police, as this information helps us target our resources where they are needed most.
