Community Safety Announcement: Increase in Mobile Phone Theft and Robbery

Residents and visitors are being advised to remain vigilant following an increase in reports of mobile phone thefts and robberies across the city between 30 August 2026 and 14 September 2026.

Police are aware of a concerning rise in incidents involving the theft of mobile phones, and it is suspected that organised criminal groups may be operating within the city centre and surrounding areas.

As the value of smartphones continues to increase, these devices remain attractive targets for criminals. Many stolen phones are believed to be exported overseas, while others may be dismantled and sold for parts.

To help reduce the risk of becoming a victim, members of the public are encouraged to take the following precautions:

Keep mobile phones out of sight when not in use.

Ensure phones are stored securely in zipped pockets, handbags, backpacks, or other closed compartments.

Remain aware of your surroundings, particularly in busy public places, shopping areas, and transport hubs.

Avoid leaving phones unattended on tables, counters, or other public surfaces.

Regularly check that you have your belongings with you, especially in crowded locations.

A small number of preventative measures can significantly reduce the opportunity for thieves to target you.

If you witness suspicious behaviour or become a victim of theft or robbery, please report the incident to the police as soon as possible.
