Another illegally modified e-bike seized in Truro

A modified e-bike has been seized by a local police team after reports of it being ridden dangerously on the streets of Truro.

Last week, members of the public raised concerns about the manner in which an e-bike was being ridden in the Tregurra area, with the rider even triggering a speed camera.

Officers from the Truro Neighbourhood Policing Team, supported by Special Constables, located the rider and issued a Section 59 warning for the antisocial use of the vehicle.

The e-bike was subsequently seized as it was being used without insurance and the rider did not hold the appropriate licence.

Inspector for the Special Constabulary Dave Christophers said: “E-bikes are heavy pieces of equipment and, when illegally modified to exceed the legal speed limit and ridden carelessly, they can pose a significant danger to other road users, pedestrians and the rider themselves.

“We take no pleasure in seizing e-bikes, but when they have the potential to cause serious and in some cases life-changing injuries, it is important that we take action.

“We are here to keep everyone safe and we will continue to be out in our communities doing just that.”

The seizure took place on Thursday 3 September.

The majority of people continue to ride their e-bikes safely; it’s the minority who have made illegal modifications or use them carelessly that action is being taken against.

If members of the public suspect someone is using an e-bike, e-motorbike or e-scooter illegally, please report it to the police.

The law states e-bikes cannot be ridden on pavements and must only be ridden on cycle paths or anywhere else pedal bikes are allowed. Legal e-bikes only have electrical assistance up to speeds of 15.5mph
