Yesterday, your local officers, in conjunction with Trading Standards & VRES (Vehicle and Roadside Enforcement Squad), attended a local E-bike store to examine the bikes for the presence of illegal modification. This was initiated following the local seizure of E-bikes which, upon examination, had been modified enabling the bikes to travel at faster speeds than they were manufactured for & safe to do.
Approximately 20% of all the E-bikes at the location were found to have this modification. The modification allows the rider, at the flick of a switch, to enhance the speed by nearly 50% which poses an inevitable safety risk to both the wider public & the rider.
As a result of our findings, the business owner has been served with various withdrawal/recall notices & is now required to provide the details of all persons that have rented or bought an E-bike from them. The business owner was also advised that they too are liable to prosecution if a rider commits offences under Road Traffic legislation due to said modifications.
Further visits by both Police & Trading Standards will be taking place over the coming months to monitor the situation & ensure that no further illegal activity is taking place.
The DVSA will also be notified.
Many residents have complained about delivery drivers & their erratic driving along pavements & at speed etc. This enforcement action will no doubt go some way in reducing this behaviour.
