Back to School Safety Tips: Plan your route before the school year begins.

The start of a new school year is an exciting time, but it also brings new challenges and safety concerns for everyone involved. Ensuring the safety of children, teachers, and parents is essential for a successful and worry-free school year. During the first week back we will be sending out some comprehensive back-to-school safety tips for everyone to keep in mind.

Plan the Route to School
Before the school year begins, take some time to plan the safest route to school. Whether walking, biking, or driving, make sure the route is well-lit, has sidewalks, and includes safe crossing points. Practice the route with your child to ensure they feel comfortable and know what to expect.

Stay Alert and Avoid Distractions
Distracted walking or driving can lead to accidents. Encourage children to stay off their phones while walking and always be aware of their surroundings. Similarly, drivers should avoid distractions like texting or eating while driving, especially in school zones.

Use Crosswalks and Follow Traffic Signals
Always use designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals when crossing the street. Teach children to look both ways before crossing and to make eye contact with drivers to ensure they are seen. Some schools now have a School Streets scheme zone, please check your school is supporting the scheme.
If you have to travel by car:

Yellow zig-zags: Never stop or park on yellow "School Keep Clear" zig-zag lines, even to quickly drop off a child.

Double yellow lines: Parking is prohibited at any time without needing extra signage.

Single yellow lines: Check nearby signs for specific operational hours when restrictions apply.

Obstructions: Do not block driveways, park on pavements, or stop across dropped kerbs and pedestrian crossings.

Park and Stride: Park a 5-to-10-minute walk away from the school entrance to reduce congestion near the gates.

School Streets Scheme: A permit or exemption (i.e a Blue Badge) is required to enter this street in a vehicle during the restricted times.

Considerate parking: Leave enough room for emergency vehicles and local residents to access their properties.

Single parking: Never double-park, as it forces children to step into moving traffic.

Automated enforcement: Be aware that many areas now use ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras and civil enforcement officers to issue fines for illegal parking
