Bike theft continues to be an issue across London, but there are simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
🔒 Lock it properly
Use a good-quality D-lock and secure the frame and both wheels to an immovable object. Consider using two different types of locks, as thieves often carry tools designed for specific locks.
📍 Choose your parking location carefully
Whenever possible, park in well-lit, busy areas covered by CCTV. Avoid leaving bikes in isolated locations or unsecured communal areas.
📝 Register your bike
Record the frame number, take clear photographs, and register your bike on a national bike database. This makes it easier to identify and return stolen bikes if recovered.
🏠 Secure your bike at home
Many thefts occur from sheds, garages and communal hallways. Use strong locks, alarms, and security lighting where possible.
🎯 Consider additional security measures
GPS trackers, security marking kits, and anti-theft bolts can make your bike less attractive to thieves and increase the chances of recovery.
👀 Stay vigilant
If you see suspicious behaviour around bike racks or residential storage areas, report it. Information from the community helps us identify offenders and recover stolen property.

 We know that bikes are an important way for people to travel and are at risk of theft because of how expensive they can be. If you have your bike stolen, please report it as soon as possible. Delays in reporting can make it harder for us to investigate and recover stolen property. If you have a bike, you can help keep it safe by following our ten ways to protect your bike. The most important thing to remember is to double lock your bike and register the frame number. You can report an incident of bike theft by using our online reporting tools at https://www.met.police.uk, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101.
