I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road Safety Issues, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. One of the issues regularly raised with us by residents, businesses and visitors to Shrewsbury Town Centre is the dangerous use of electric scooters in pedestrian areas.
At approximately 5:15pm today, PC Bourne was on patrol in the town centre when he identified two electric scooters being ridden at speed through busy pedestrian areas. Four children were found travelling on the two scooters.
As a result, both scooters were seized.
We know that pedestrians can feel intimidated or unsafe when electric scooters are ridden through crowded areas, particularly where families, older people and those with mobility issues are present. We have listened to those concerns and will continue to take action where offences are identified.
The law on electric scooters:
• Privately owned e-scooters are classed as motor vehicles.
• They cannot legally be ridden on roads, pavements, parks, shopping centres or other public places.
• They can only be used on private land with the permission of the landowner.
• As privately owned e-scooters cannot currently be insured for road use, they are liable to seizure by police when used illegally.
We will continue to patrol Shrewsbury Town Centre and respond to concerns raised by our communities.
