We would like to remind residents to stay vigilant when using dating websites, social media, and messaging apps.

Romance fraud occurs when criminals create fake online profiles to gain someone's trust and affection before asking for money, bank details, or personal information. These fraudsters can spend weeks or even months building a relationship before making their request.

Warning Signs of Romance Fraud: ❤️ They declare strong feelings very quickly.
💷 They ask for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or financial assistance.
📱 They avoid meeting in person or making video calls.
✈️ They claim to work overseas, be in the military, or face an emergency requiring funds.
🔒 They encourage you to keep the relationship secret from family and friends.

Protect Yourself: ✅ Never send money to someone you have not met in person.
✅ Be cautious when sharing personal information online.
✅ Reverse image search profile photos if something does not feel right.
✅ Speak to a trusted friend or family member if an online relationship becomes serious.
✅ Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it probably is.
