BEYOND THE SURFACE | 12 | Finding the Exit |
||
|
Over the past few week , we've tried to look at our community little differently. Because what we see isn't always the whole story. Behind behaviour there can be vulnerability. Behind vulnerability there can be exploitation. There can be addiction, fear, isolation, pressure — or simply a pattern that has become difficult to break. Understanding that does not mean ignoring harm. It means knowing when to listen, when to support, when to set a boundary — and when action is needed. It also means remembering something important: People can change. A difficult chapter does not have to become the whole story. For some, the first step may be a conversation. For others, it may be support, accountability or a firm intervention. There is no single route forward. And there is no single organisation that can provide it. Sometimes the police need to act. Sometimes another service is better placed to help. Sometimes a family member, trusted person, community group or faith organisation can make the difference. What matters is that we don't stop looking for a way forward. Because finding the exit isn't about pretending the harm never happened. It's about making sure that safety, responsibility, support and the possibility of change can exist together. And perhaps it begins with something very simple: making sure people know there is a door. Beyond the Surface.
