Keyless Vehicle Theft Crime Prevention Advice
Signal Blocking (Anti-Relay Attacks) Many modern cars are stolen via "relay attacks," where thieves use an antenna to capture the signal from your key fob inside your house and beam it to the car. Use a Faraday Pouch: Always store all vehicle keys (including spares) in a high-quality signal-blocking pouch as soon as you walk inside. Turn Off Key Fob Signals: Some modern key fobs allow you to temporarily disable the wireless signal by pressing a specific button combination (check your owner's manual).
Physical Immobilisation If a vehicle is physically locked down, electronic hacking becomes useless Steering Wheel Lock: Use a robust, visual deterrent like a high-security steering wheel lock. If thieves see this through the window, they usually move on because cutting it takes too much time and makes noise. OBD Port Lock: Thieves often plug a device into the diagnostic port under the dashboard to program a new key or override the immobiliser. A physical lock over this port can stop them from plugging in.
Secondary Tracking & Independent Security Do not rely solely on the manufacturer's built-in app, as these can be disconnected. Independent GPS Tracker: Hide a battery-powered or hardwired third-party GPS tracker (like a magnetic tracker or an AirTag/SmartTag with the internal speaker removed) deep inside the vehicle where thieves won't look. Driveway Security: Install motion-activated floodlights, a CCTV camera network, or a physical driveway bollard that blocks the vehicle from being driven away.
