Here’s an update on burglary locally. ⚠️ Distraction Burglaries - Crime Prevention Advice ⚠️
Shooter's Hill SNT would like to make residents aware of reports of distraction burglaries taking place in the area.
Distraction burglars pretend to be someone they are not in order to gain entry to your home and steal property. Common methods include:
• Pretending to be from a utility company investigating a gas or water leak. • Asking for help to leave a note for a neighbour. • Claiming to be in a hurry or emergency and needing to get into your home quickly. • Working in teams where one person distracts you while the other searches your home.
How to protect yourself
✅ Always ask to see identification and check it carefully. ✅ Keep your front door locked, even when you are at home. ✅ Use a door chain or door viewer before opening the door. ✅ Do not let anyone into your home unless you are expecting them or have verified who they are. ✅ If someone claims to be from a utility company, contact the company directly using a trusted number to verify their identity. ✅ Ask any unexpected caller to return at a time when a friend, relative or neighbour can be present. ✅ Report any suspicious behaviour to police immediately.
If you believe a crime is in progress, call 999. For non-emergency matters, contact police on 101 or report online via the Metropolitan Police website.
Please remain vigilant and look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours who may be at greater risk of becoming victims of distraction burglary.
