Protect yourself from common scams

Dear Residents,

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to remain vigilant and protect themselves against fraud and scams, which continue to affect people across our communities.

Fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their methods and can contact victims by telephone, text message, email, social media, or even in person. Taking a few simple precautions can help keep you, your family, and your finances safe.

Common Scams to Look Out For

1. Banking and Impersonation Scams Criminals may contact you pretending to be from your bank, the police, HMRC, or another trusted organisation. They may claim there is a problem with your account or that you are under investigation.

✅ Remember:

Your bank or the police will never ask for your PIN, password, or full banking details.

Never transfer money to a "safe account" as requested by a caller.

If in doubt, hang up and contact the organisation directly using a trusted number.

2. Delivery and Parcel Scams You may receive a text or email claiming that a parcel cannot be delivered until a fee is paid or personal details are confirmed.

✅ Remember:

Do not click links in unexpected messages.

Check the status of deliveries directly through the official courier website or app.

3. Investment and Cryptocurrency Scams Fraudsters may offer investment opportunities promising high returns with little or no risk.

✅ Remember:

If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Always research investment companies thoroughly before parting with any money.

4. Online Shopping Scams Fake websites and social media adverts often advertise popular products at significantly reduced prices.

✅ Remember:

Use reputable retailers.

Pay by credit card where possible for additional protection.

Check reviews and website details before making purchases.

5. Romance Scams Criminals build relationships online over time before requesting money for emergencies, travel, or investments.

✅ Remember:

Be cautious when communicating with people you have never met in person.

Never send money or share financial details with someone you only know online.

How to Protect Yourself

Use strong, unique passwords for online accounts.

Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible.

Be cautious of unsolicited calls, texts, emails, and social media messages.

Take time to verify requests for money or personal information.

Talk to family, friends, or neighbours if you are unsure about a communication you've received.

Reporting Fraud

If you believe you have been targeted by a scam:

Contact your bank immediately if money or financial information has been compromised.

Report fraud to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via www.actionfraud.police.uk.

Report suspicious text messages by forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM).

Please consider sharing this advice with friends, family members, and neighbours, particularly those who may be more vulnerable to fraud.

By staying alert and talking openly about scams, we can help protect our community from becoming victims of crime.
