Wildfire Safety Alert: Increased Risk During Hot Weather

Community Safety Alert

With temperatures continuing to rise and conditions becoming hotter and drier, the risk of wildfires is significantly increased. Even a small spark can quickly develop into a serious fire, threatening people, wildlife, homes, and open spaces.

We are asking all residents and visitors to take extra care when enjoying the outdoors and to help prevent accidental fires.

How You Can Help Prevent Wildfires

Do not light fires or barbecues in parks, woodlands, grasslands, or other open areas.

Never discard cigarette ends on the ground or from vehicles.

Avoid using disposable barbecues in areas of dry vegetation.

Do not leave glass bottles or litter behind, as they can contribute to fire risks and hinder emergency access.

Ensure vehicle engines and exhausts are not parked on dry grass.

Report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999 and asking for the Fire Service.

Staying Safe

If you are in an area where a wildfire occurs:

Leave the area immediately and move to a safe location.

Follow advice from emergency services and local authorities.

Avoid walking or driving through smoke, as it can reduce visibility and affect breathing.

Keep windows and doors closed if smoke is affecting your property.

Check on vulnerable family members, neighbours, and friends who may need assistance.

Be Vigilant

If you see suspicious behaviour, deliberate fire-setting, or anyone acting recklessly around open land, please report it to the police. Early reporting can help prevent serious incidents and protect our communities.

Working together, we can help reduce the risk of wildfires and keep our communities safe during periods of hot weather. Stay aware, act responsibly, and report any concerns promptly.
