Staying Safe During the Hot Weather

Dear Residents,

With the current spell of hot weather continuing, your local Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to share some important safety reminders to help keep you, your family, and your community safe.

Home Security

As temperatures rise, many people leave windows and doors open to keep their homes cool. Unfortunately, this can create opportunities for opportunist burglars.

Please remember:

Close and secure all windows and doors when leaving your property, even if only for a short period.

Do not leave valuables on display near open windows.

Ensure sheds, garages, and outbuildings are also secured.

A few simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Vehicle Safety

We have recently seen a number of vehicles breaking down during the hot weather.

Before setting off on any journey, please:

Check coolant and fluid levels.

Ensure tyres are correctly inflated and in good condition.

Carry water, particularly for longer journeys.

Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy before travelling.

Taking a few minutes to perform these checks could prevent an inconvenient and potentially dangerous breakdown.

Dog Owners

The RSPCA has issued warnings regarding the dangers of exercising dogs during periods of extreme heat.

Please:

Avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day.

Walk early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler.

Ensure your pets always have access to shade and fresh water.

Never leave a dog in a parked vehicle, even for a short time.

If the pavement feels too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog's paws.

Barbecues and Fire Risk

The recent dry weather has left grass and open spaces extremely dry, increasing the risk of fires.

We strongly advise residents to think carefully before using disposable or portable barbecues.

Please remember:

Many locations, including Aylestone Meadows, are strictly no-barbecue areas.

Dispose of cigarettes responsibly.

Never leave open flames unattended.

Report any signs of fire immediately.

A small spark can quickly become a major incident in these conditions.

Looking After Each Other

Finally, please spare a thought for vulnerable members of our community.

If you have:

Elderly neighbours,

Vulnerable residents,

Friends or family living alone,

please take a few moments to check on them during the hot weather and ensure they have access to water and support if needed.
