Rogue traders who emptied vulnerable man’s bank account sentenced |

A rogue builder who emptied an elderly man’s bank account, taking more than £10,000 for non-existent roof repairs has been jailed. Danny George Quinn, 40, of Cransley Road, Loddington and his son Danny Jo Quinn, 19, of Burnaby Road, Sandyford, knocked on the 90-year-old’s door in March 2025, offering to fix some cracked tiles on the roof of the property. The father and son then visited the property more than ten times over a three-month period. On each visit they claimed that extra work needed doing and always asked for payment in cash. In June 2025, the Quinns demanded a ‘final’ payment of £2500, with one waiting in the victim’s car whilst he went to withdraw cash from the bank. The bank teller, seeing the previous large withdrawals and that the elderly man’s bank account balance was down to £24, contacted police to invoke the Banking Protocol. Officers attended and spoke with the victim who was confused and unable to specify what work had been completed. Safeguards were put in place whilst officers from our fraud team built a case which showed the Quinns accompanying the victim to multiple ATMs and banks to withdraw money for them. They also took the victim’s bank card, using it at local shops and ATMs to withdraw more cash. A roof survey showed that very little work had taken place. Since the incident, the victim’s family has seen a change in him. The victim’s son wrote: “I believe they persistently targeted my dad due to his confusion which is obvious to anyone who talks to him for any length of time. “They appear to have been merciless in taking all of his money from his bank account and gave no thought to how it would impact on him. Since my dad’s money was stolen from him, I have noticed a significant change in him both mentally and physically it’s almost like he has lost his confidence and started to give up.” On Thursday 30 July at Derby Crown Court, Danny George Quinn and Danny Jo Quinn pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation. Danny George Quinn was sentenced to three years and four months in prison. He was ordered to pay the court £228. Danny Jo Quinn was sentenced to nine months in a young offenders’ institute, suspended for 18 months. He was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and pay £41. Both father and son have a restraining order not to contact the victim, or to enter Mickleover in Derbyshire until 30 July 2031. DC Calum Marrows, officer in the case, said: “Both the Quinns hounded the victim over a period of months as they emptied his bank account. “They took advantage of the man’s vulnerability, shamelessly returning and pressing him for every penny they could. Their actions are truly appalling and it’s only thanks to a bank worker realising that something wasn’t right and using the Banking Protocol that we have been able to hold them responsible.” The Banking Protocol The Banking Protocol is a scheme in which bank and Post Office staff are trained to look out for unusual activity that may indicate a customer is a victim of fraud. This can include large or regular withdrawals, out of character spending or signs that someone is being pressured. The staff should ask the customer a series of questions, ideally in a private setting. If they’re still concerned, they should call 999 and say ‘banking protocol’. Officers will be dispatched immediately where possible.
