Horse Riders and Road Safety

We are reminding motorists to take extra care when encountering horses on our roads following a recent incident in the local area which resulted in a rider sustaining minor injuries.

Horses can be unpredictable when frightened, and vehicles approaching too quickly, passing too closely, or making sudden loud noises can cause them to react unexpectedly. This can place riders, drivers and other road users at risk. 

When driving near horses, please:

• Slow down and approach with caution
• Give horses plenty of room when passing
• Be patient and wait for a safe opportunity to overtake
• Avoid sounding your horn or revving your engine
• Pay attention to any signals given by the rider

Horse riders have just as much right to use the road as any other road user. A few moments of patience and consideration can help prevent injuries and keep our roads safe for everyone.
