I wanted to provide an update regarding the theft of motor vehicles, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. Increase in Vehicle Thefts and Attempted Thefts – Crime Prevention Advice
We have seen an increase in both attempted thefts and thefts of motor vehicles within the ward over the past month.
The vehicles most commonly being targeted are Honda and Lexus models. Offenders are using methods that can bypass or disable vehicle security systems, allowing them to gain access to and start the vehicle.
We strongly advise vehicle owners to consider using additional security measures alongside the standard security features supplied by the manufacturer. Taking extra precautions can significantly reduce the likelihood of your vehicle being targeted.
Security Tips
Use a steering wheel lock as a visible deterrent to thieves.
Store keyless entry fobs in a signal-blocking (Faraday) pouch when not in use.
Keep vehicle keys away from doors, windows, and letterboxes.
Consider fitting an additional aftermarket immobiliser.
Install a Thatcham-approved vehicle tracker to assist in recovering a stolen vehicle.
Park in a garage whenever possible.
If a garage is not available, park in a well-lit area covered by CCTV.
Park close to walls, fences, or other vehicles to make access more difficult.
Turn your wheels towards the kerb when parked and apply the handbrake.
Use a driveway security post or bollard to prevent vehicles being driven away.
Ensure your vehicle's software and security systems are kept up to date.
Remove valuable items from your vehicle and avoid leaving them on display.
Check that all doors, windows, and sunroofs are fully secured before leaving your vehicle.
Consider installing a dash camera with parking mode, which may capture suspicious activity.
If your vehicle has a keyless entry function, check with the manufacturer to see if it can be disabled when not required.
Be cautious of anyone attempting to distract you while parking or leaving your vehicle.
Report suspicious behaviour, unfamiliar vehicles repeatedly driving around, or individuals checking door handles immediately.
If You See Something Suspicious
If you witness suspicious activity around vehicles, please report it as soon as possible. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress, call 999. For non-emergency reporting, call 101 or report online through the Metropolitan Police website.

 We know that people can be concerned about the personal and financial impact of having their vehicle stolen, which is why we will pursue and arrest those who break the law. Please consider taking the following steps to keep your vehicle safe: Check that your vehicle is locked and secure every time you leave it. Thieves often look for easy opportunities to steal from vehicles. They will usually try the handles until they get lucky and find one that has been left unlocked. Keep your keys safe, out of view when at home and away from your front door. If you have a keyless entry vehicle, keep the key well away from the vehicle while at home and turn off wireless signals on your fob when its not being used. Consider putting the keys in a screened or signal blocking pouch, such as a Faraday Bag and check that it is still working every few months. Park your vehicle in a private garage if you can. If you don’t have access to one, try to park in a well –lit open space. Try to use public car parks that are part of the police approved Park Mark safer parking scheme. Secure your number plates with tamper resistant screws to avoid them being stolen and used by others.
