Community Safety Alert: Beware of Distraction Theft !

Distraction theft occurs when criminals deliberately distract you to steal your belongings, such as your mobile phone, wallet, bank cards, handbag, or other valuables. These offences can happen in busy public places, shopping centres, transport hubs, car parks, and even at cash machines.

Offenders may:

Ask for directions or assistance.

Spill something on your clothing and offer to help clean it.

Claim there is a problem with your vehicle.

Create a disturbance to divert your attention.

Work in pairs or groups, with one person distracting you while another steals your property.

How to Protect Yourself

✅ Keep valuables out of sight and secure.
✅ Be vigilant when approached by strangers.
✅ Keep bags zipped and close to your body.
✅ Avoid displaying large amounts of cash or expensive items.
✅ Shield your PIN when using cash machines or card payment terminals.
✅ Trust your instincts and move away if a situation feels suspicious.

If You Become a Victim

Report the incident to the police as soon as possible.

If bank cards or phones are stolen, contact your bank and service provider immediately.

Try to remember descriptions of any suspects, vehicles, or the direction they travelled.
