Update On Operation Trimburg Road Safety Operation In July

We just wanted to update you all on a series of recent road traffic operations neighbourhood policing teams and our Roads Policing Units have been carrying out in your communities this month.

Officers have once again been conducting activity as part of our Operation Trimburg initiative and have been active on identified roads in Dewsbury, Mirfield, Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike, Liversedge, Gomersal and the Holme Valley. 

Fixed and mobile patrols took place in communities from July 2 onwards, including in Melham on 7 July, Heckmondwike on 13 July, Cleckheaton on 8 July and Dewsbury and Mirfield on six dates across the month.  Patrol locations were in part based on intelligence from residents.

The operations resulted in 101 drivers being issued with Traffic Offence Report notices of prosecution.  There included five notices given to persons for driving without due care and attention, and action being taken against 43 for not wearing seatbelts.

Fifteen drivers were also found to have no MOT, while six motorists were detected using mobile phones whilst driving.

Other offences detected by officers included the misuse of drugs, speeding, driving without insurance and various offences relating to vehicle parts.

Several cars were also seized for document offences.

Operation Trimburg itself remains focussed on targeting the #fatal5 offences identified as being the main cause of serious and fatal road incidents.   

The Fatal 5 offences are not wearing a seatbelt, drink and drug driving, using a mobile phone, speeding and careless driving.

West Yorkshire Police also remains committed to Vision Zero.  This is a road safety partnership aim established with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and other key partners to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe serious injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all in West Yorkshire.     

Inspector Liz Lockwood of the Dewsbury and Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:  “Operation Trimburg was established to provide a dedicated and long term response to residents’ concerns about poor driving in parts of Kirklees. 

“Following recent issues raised by residents, our roads policing colleagues attended in communities including Mirfield on multiple dates resulting in a car being seized and drivers being issued with Traffic Offence Reports for offences including driving without due care and attention and having no insurance.  All will now be prosecuted.

“We continue to urge drivers in both Mirfield and in other Kirklees communities to keep contacting us with intelligence about dangerous and illegal driving in their communities.

“That information can be key in making sure these patrols are where they are most needed and taking action against those posing a danger to other road users.”
