Advice from our friends at the RNLI Urgent Water Safety Advice We have received reports of several incidents involving young people tombstoning (jumping) from the wooden structures, known locally as the dolphins, in the River Afan.
These structures are extremely dangerous, and warning signs are in place highlighting the risks.
We strongly urge everyone not to take part in this activity. Jumping from height into the river can have serious consequences, including:
• Striking submerged objects hidden beneath the water.
• Becoming trapped in deep mud.
• Getting tangled in mooring ropes or other underwater hazards.
• Experiencing cold water shock, even during hot weather, which can quickly lead to panic and loss of control in the water.
Although the water may appear calm, the dangers beneath the surface are often impossible to see.
