Dear Residents Water Safety Advice: The Dangers of Outdoor Swimming As the weather gets warmer, many people may be tempted to cool off by swimming in rivers, lakes, quarries, reservoirs, and other open water locations. While these places may appear safe, outdoor swimming can present serious and potentially life-threatening dangers. 🚔 Police Safety Advice Cold Water Shock can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness. Sudden immersion in cold water can cause involuntary gasping, rapid breathing, and loss of control. Hidden Hazards such as submerged objects, rocks, weeds, broken glass, and strong underwater currents can cause injury or trap swimmers. Changing Water Depths can catch people out, particularly when diving into unknown water. Strong Currents and Undertows can quickly pull even experienced swimmers into difficulty. Isolation is a significant risk. Many outdoor locations do not have lifeguards or immediate access to emergency assistance. ✅ Stay Safe Only swim at recognised locations where safety measures are in place. Never enter the water alone. Avoid swimming after consuming alcohol or drugs. Supervise children at all times near water. If you see someone in trouble, call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service if inland, or the Coastguard if at the coast. Do not enter the water yourself unless trained to do so. Remember, what appears to be a refreshing way to cool down can quickly become a tragedy. Please think carefully before entering open water and help us keep our communities safe this summer. Kind regards PCSO 6230 RAINBOW | ||
