🛴🚴 Know the Law: E-Scooters and E-Bikes

As the popularity of e-scooters and e-bikes continues to grow, we would like to remind residents of the laws and responsibilities surrounding their use to help keep everyone safe.

Privately owned e-scooters are illegal to use on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes, parks and other public spaces. They can only be ridden on private land with the permission of the landowner. Riders found using privately owned e-scooters in public may face a fine, penalty points on their driving licence and the seizure of their e-scooter by police. 

Only e-scooters hired through authorised Government trial schemes can be used on public roads and cycle lanes in approved areas. Even then, they must not be ridden on pavements. 

Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs), commonly known as e-bikes, are legal to use on UK roads and cycle paths provided they meet the legal requirements. The rider must be at least 14 years old, and the bike must have working pedals with an electric motor that provides assistance only up to the legal limit. Bikes that exceed these limits may be classed as motor vehicles and require registration, insurance and a driving licence.
